MESSY WORKSHOP BLOG HOP

My friends know that I’m a talker, not a writer. Oh, I may write the odd poem or short story, but that is where my patience ends.  So it will come as no surprise to some that I have let me blog slide…neither will it come as a surprise that I forced myself to update it by joining a blog hop.  There is nothing better than a forced deadline, where I have given my word and other people are depending on me, to kick my butt into gear. At the end of this post there will be links to the messy workshops of some very talented artists.  Please take some time to visit them and get inspired by their chaos.  Thank you to Brenda Sue Lansdowne for hosting this event.

In the past 2.5 years we have moved twice so I have let my jewelry workspace become very organic; by that I mean I have been lazy about setting it up in the near anal-retentive organization for which I am famous.  Friends who make fun of me for my love of “organizational tools” and The Container Store, will have to stop after these photos. Without further adieu, here is a glimpse behind the Windbent curtain.

The plan was to paint this room so it was still bare walls until I hung a calendar last month.  Some nice artwork (ceramic and paintings) still need to be hung.  I also have a dry erase/cork board that I used to use as my inspiration wall.  I will likely hang that over the shelving. To show you glimmers of my former neatness, let’s get a close-up on those shelves.

I do love using old jars for storage.  I also bough some reclaimed test tubes and Petri dishes from The Scrap Exchange in Durham, North Carolina.  The test tubes are great for seed beads and the Petri dishes I use to hold scrap, works in progress, or damaged jewelry/parts that people have given me until I figure out where I’m going with them.

Another thing I still need to do is hang a dowel on the wall for my chains.  Right now they’re thrown into the bottom of my tool container.

The various plastic bins in the room are filled with paint, wire, polymer clay, wood, steel wool, polishing clothes, glues, glitter, plastic mixing cups and sticks, bulk stones, and large pieces that will not fit in anything else.

At this point, I do have to admit that no matter how clean and organized the rest of the office, my actual work table tends to look like this all the time. I would love a jeweler’s bench one day…

This house is smaller than our last one so my husband has a few things thrown in.  He’s very sweet trying to take the blame for this mess but the truth is, here are the only things in the room that are solely his:

I’m looking for a bookcase to put in here so I can organize all the jewelry and art books, catalogs, and packing materials I have.  I also have a table and displays for when I sell at an event. What a mess!

And there you have my little bit of space in the Universe.  Thank you for looking.  You can also find me here:

About windbent

I try to reclaim, reuse and re-love items from our past and make them modern again. I see my jewelry as a fusion of old and new, cross cultural, and spanning time periods. Because I use vintage items within my jewelry, there may be age related signs of love that make them special. Each piece will be unique or made in small batches that are similar, but still different. If I find an item I love and it doesn't want to become jewelry, I give it a new home in another art format.

I love that you can tell you are organized even in you “mess.” I am still building my stash so I just look and envy all the cool little stuff I hope to add to my “mess” some day.

  3. kate says:

Petri dishes! Too funny! A place to “incubate” ideas. I’ll bet your husband has pulled out a golf club or two just to find some beads in that bag!

  4. B'sue says:

Lennis, what you have is completely working for you! Thanks so much for sharing it and for taking part in our hop today!

  5. limamike says:

I would love to go through all those bins of beads!

Love seeing your space and all it’s goodies! Warmly, Tracy

  7. All those containers! Wow, can I come over and “help” you find things? Seriously, it’s a great spot for working.

  8. Brassy Steamington says:

If that’s messy…I say that’s pretty darn clean and organized. And a work table should always be covered in magic waiting to happen! ~ Brassy

  9. I’ve had so much fun peeking into everyone’s spaces today. Great ideas for organizing everywhere. Thanks for the tour of your workspace. Lot’s of eye candy here..love it!

  10. Harry W Wood says:

looks very organised to me..I would love to learn a little of that AR but I’m too old I just work in a pile.

Looking good! A little organization, a little mess – a perfect mix!

  12. Deb Bee says:

I like all the bins and would love to look through them.

  13. You are so organized even when you think you are messy! What I really want to do is to open all your neat containers and see what’s inside 😀

  14. Thanks for the peek! Want to see what you do when you paint the room. What color are you going to do it? Very nice.

  15. It all looks great – thanks for the tour!

  16. I think a shelving until, or even some floating shelves above the one table would work for all your beads boxes and bins, then some book ends or magazine holders on the top of the table along the wall beneath the shelves for the beading/jewelry related stuff you use a lot 🙂 You can also stretch your legs out to where your comfy while sitting at the tables to find out if you have available space under there too 😉 lol

  17. Looks good to me! Thanks for letting us visit!

  18. Beanzie-The Vintage Heart says:

Love your workspace tour! Thanks for sharing! : )

  21. Wow! What a great workshop, Lennis!!! I love all your orginization! And oh my gosh, I love your scientific storage!!! How cute!!!

You have an awesome array of things in your shop… You won’t miss that bag of Tiger’s Eye will you? hehehe Very nice selection of beads!!!

Thank you so much for inviting us to take a tour of your space! I really enjoyed seeing everything!

    • windbent says:

Funny you say that about the Tiger’s Eye. I bought a load of stones at the market in New Orleans in the mid 90’s and I was thinking about getting rid of them since I don’t do a lot of work with them. Then, I had a client who wanted something made with semi precious stones and I was lucky they were there. Now, I find myself wanting to keep everything.
